The Swing Catalyst Balance Plate 3 was officially launched at the PGA Merchandise Show earlier this year, and the first units were shipped out shortly after. Although the new pressure plate offers some great improvements the price is still the same! We are now also offering a rent option for customers located in the US (see below).

Improvements

Stronger – The body of the Balance Plate 3 has been completely redesigned. The internal cross beam structure makes the Balance Plate a lot stronger and adds protection to the 2048 high resolution sensors on the inside. While it has become stronger, the weight has been reduced to only 13 lbs (5.9 kg) and made the new Balance Plate much more portable.

Faster – The Balance Plate 3 provides 135 samples per second (Hz), making it 35% faster than its predecessor. For an average PGA Tour player this increase in speed translates into 10 additional data readings just during the down swing, enhancing the Swing Catalyst Balance Plate’s position as the most accurate pressure device on the market.

Better – The pressure range (3.5 to 350 kPa) is almost doubled with the new Balance Plate 3. The increased pressure range in conjunction with the new calibration algorithms allows for more accurate data readings during peaks of high pressure, such as the short period just before the time of impact.

New feature

Vertical force – Our research has shown that vertical forces are extremely important to the creation of club head speed in many golfers. Previously vertical force measurements have only been available to our 3D Motion Plate users, but with all the new improvements we can now offer accurate vertical force measurements to our Balance Plate users as well. This much anticipated feature will only be available with the brand new Balance Plate 3.

Rent option (only available in the US).

Now you also have the option to rent the Balance Plate for only $295 per month. The monthly fee also includes the Swing Catalyst video software, which offers a seamless integration of the pressure data from the Balance Plate and the ball and club data from your launch monitor. The rent requires an initial payment of $1,500 and a $500 security deposit. Total value of the package (Balance Plate 3 + software) is $8,180. The Extended Service Agreement (ESA) and the Support and Update Plan are also included in this package.

Please contact us for more information about the Balance Plate 3 and your payment options.

We are very proud to welcome two new additions to our already great group of Ambassadors.
Here is a short introduction of the two:

Travis Fulton is currently ranked as a Top 40 instructor under the age of 40 by Golf Digest and is the Lead Instructor at Pablo Creek in Jacksonville, Florida. Travis is also an integral part of Golf channel’s on-air instruction, which includes co-hosting “Morning Drive”. Previously, Travis had been with the TOURAcademy, as well as a regular guest on the PGA TOUR Network on SiriusXM Radio.

- As a golf coach, I have always tried to stay current and learn from advancements in technology. Swing Catalyst is a great example of this allowing to match up 2D video, Trackman data with how a player applies ground force in the golf swing.  This immediate feedback has been a great education for me and allowed the opportunity to share with students in a functional & attainable manner. Thank you Swing Catalyst for pushing the boundaries and educating us all, says Travis Fulton.

Dom DiJulia is a Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher since 2007, two-time Philadelphia PGA Teacher of the Year and a recipient of the Philadelphia PGA Horton Smith Award for outstanding contributions to education. Dom is currently based at the Jericho National Golf Club in New Hope, PA.

- There are two primary reasons that I chose Swing Catalyst.  First, they have fantastic products that measure foot pressure and ground reaction forces with a degree of accuracy and consistency that is research quality.  Second, they not only have a support team that will provide me with the practical help needed to use the products, the team will also provide ongoing education to speed up the learning process that comes along with integrating new technology into an instruction program. A significant secondary benefit of teaming up with Swing Catalyst is that I will now be able to run one software program to see three kinds of information: Swing Catalyst data, TrackMan data and video synchronized with Swing Catalyst data.  The software is very elegant and highly customizable.  It became clear that teaming up with Swing Catalyst would make me a better coach so I moved forward and am very glad that I did, says Dom DiJulia.

Urban Golf Performance (UGP) opened a new state-of-the-art golf training facility near Los Angeles International Airport last week. The new facility will also serve as the Swing Catalyst R&D Center and the headquarter of Swing Catalyst Research Director Dr. Scott Lynn.

The brand new centre, located only minutes away from LAX, includes several high-speed cameras, the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate and a TrackMan, all synchronized through the Swing Catalyst software. This is UGP’s second location in Los Angeles, and the company has plans to expand rapidly.

– Swing Catalyst is changing the landscape of how golf swings are captured, and does it in a clean, sleek format that everyone can get behind. The software really is intuitive; while the data is reliable, accurate, and practically applicable. UGP is continuing to forge the pathway for how generations of golfers will learn and connect with the game of golf, and Swing Catalyst is a big part of that future, says UGP founder Mackenzie Todd.

On Sunday (June 12) you will have the chance to test all these technologies and also attend our first ever Level 2 seminar in Los Angeles. Click here to sign-up for the seminar.

More than 600 instructors around the world have passed our Level 1 Certification Course so far. The Level 1 is a free (for a limited time) online course available through our website. Watch the video seminar and take the multiple choice test to become a Swing Catalyst Level 1 Certified Instructor!

The Swing Catalyst Certification Program provides insights into how the best golfers in the world are using the ground to create power and consistency, and how the ground reaction forces affect the golf swing. There is no requirement to own a Swing Catalyst Balance Plate or a 3D Motion Plate to take this course.

The program is led by Dr. Scott Lynn, Associate Professor at California State University, Fullerton and Research Director at Swing Catalyst. The main purpose of the program is to provide a better understanding of how biomechanics can help golfers improve their swing and avoid injury. The certification program is divided into two courses, Level 1 and Level 2.

  • Level 1 is an online course which focuses on basic biomechanics terminology and the difference between shifting mass and shifting pressure (CoM vs CoP). Students will also learn about the Swing Catalyst Balance Plate and how the best players in the world are shifting pressure to create more power.
  • Level 2 is a one day seminar and offers students who have completed Level 1, a more in-depth look at biomechanics in golf. During the seminar students will also learn how the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate can help visualize the invisible forces leading to a powerful and efficient golf swing.

Take the Level 1 course today (free), and sign up for a Level 2 course afterwards!

We are very proud to welcome two of the highest ranked golf instructors in America and World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame inductees Chuck Cook and Mike Adams as Swing Catalyst owners.

Earlier this spring we installed the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate at Chuck Cook’s facility at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin.Chuck Cook is currently coaching PGA Tour players Keegan Bradley, Luke Donald, Jason Dufner and Joe Ogilvie amongst others.
-Throughout my career, I have tried to stay current with advances in my profession. Swing Catalyst allows me to do this. Not only having CoP tracing but also ground forces application in all three dimensions allow me to pinpoint swing errors in a much quicker time frame and adds another metric when paired with video and launch monitor info, says Chuck Cook

Chuck Cook with Swing Catalyst Research Director Dr. Scott Lynn and the legendary Tom Kite (click on image for larger version)

Last month we also installed the 3D Motion Plate for Mike Adams at Hamilton Farm Golf Club in New Jersey. Mike Adams will work closely with Swing Catalyst Research Director Dr. Scott Lynn, and co-host several Swing Catalyst seminars later this year.
-Every golfer is unique in how they swing the club in time and space. Only by being able to combine high speed video, swing radar information, and understanding the students’ ground reaction pattern am I truly able to create a swing blueprint for each golfer. Swing Catalyst ability to integrate all three into a real time application gives me the keys to proceed with each student. The traces I get from Swing Catalyst helps me to guide each student into the changes necessary to help them use the ground more efficiently and create more power resulting in longer straighter shots. The Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate is the Ferrari of all force and pressure plates, says Mike Adams.

We have had the pleasure to welcome several new top coaches to our exclusive group of Ambassadors the last couple of months. The latest addition to this prestigous group of golf coaches is Cameron McCormick, the 2015 PGA Teacher of the Year and swing coach of Jordan Spieth.

Earlier this year McCormick announced his appointment as Director of Instruction at the soon to be opened Trinity Forest Golf Club. This stunning world class facility will include 3 Swing Catalyst Balance Plates plus our flagship game improvement system, the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate.

- Following my philosophy of…measure twice, cut once and leave an athletes functional fingerprint intact; it’s imperative that the diagnostics and assessments I make equip me with valid actionable insight. For this reason I trust in Swing Catalyst to help me see beyond the visible; pairing together high speed motion video with ground force traces and accompanying collision dynamics and shot results they are pushing the boundaries in technology to aid in player development, says Cameron McCormick.

We are also very proud to welcome Warren Mercer (The Grange Golf Club, Australia), Jeff Smith (TPC Summerlin, USA), Tom Rezendes (NorCal Golf Academy, USA), Rob Noel (Rob Noel Golf Academy, USA), Shaun Webb (David Toms Academy, USA), Jeff Isler (Jeff Isler Golf, USA), Guillaume Biaugeaud (L'Académie Golfmechanics, France), Erik Blomqvist (Balance Golf, Sweden) and Michael Dickie (Michael International Golf Academy, China) as our new Swing Catalyst Ambassadors.

You can now start using the Swing Catalyst state-of-the-art swing analysis software for only $34.95 per month! Swing Catalyst 6.0 comes with a new, elegant design, several new features, and is even more user friendly than previous versions.

The subscription model is a great choice if you wish to spread your costs over several years rather than an upfront payment, or if you need the software only for specific times of the year (for example during the summer). You only sign up for one month at a time, and can cancel your subscription at any time.

The brand new Swing Catalyst 6.0 adds support for a wide range of new cameras, including popular brands such as Ximea, Point Grey and Basler. You can now also purchase PGA/LPGA Tour model swings directly via the Swing Explorer. We have collected swings from numerous PGA and LPGA tour players over the last two years, all of which are now available to Swing Catalyst users. The model swings include high-speed video from two camera angles, plus data from the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate and a launch monitor.

Another great feature of the Swing Catalyst 6.0 is the ability to show multiple launch monitor data boxes simultaneously. The Swing Catalyst App won the honors in the Training Aids + Customer Fitting category at the event that took place in Augsburg, Germany.

Tony Bennett, director of education for the PGA of Europe, presented the award at a ceremony at the show. The evaluation criteria for the award was "functionality, degrees of innovation, user friendliness and design/style". The jury of experts included Andreas Dorsch, executive manager of Golf Management Association of Germany; Ben Evans, editor of Cutting Edge Golf; Klaus Nadizar, editor-in-chief of Golfrevue; Eva Neumann, owner of ONE Golf Coaching & Consulting; Harry Schenavsky, executive manager of EGM Ihr Golfprofi GmbH; Phillipp von Schönborn, editor of Golf Journal and Martin Westphal, member of the Education Committee of the PGA of Europe and R&A Golf Development Consultant Team, and managing director of Märkischer Golfclub Postdam.

"We were extremely proud to receive this award on Sunday," says Tom Christian, marketing manager for Swing Catalyst. "Our team of developers has been working hard for more than two years developing the app, and is still working just as hard to improve its functionality while also adding new and exciting features. Close to 10,000 golfers have downloaded the app only two months after its release, and we're hoping many more will download it in the months to come. Our app is 100 percent free to download and use, so go and check it out yourself on the App Store now."

The Swing Catalyst team recently installed a 3D Motion Plate system for Justin Rose in his home in the Bahamas, as well as for his coach, Sean Foley, in Orlando. "In my quest to be the best player I can be, Swing Catalyst helps me ensure no stone is left unturned and provides me with the confidence that I am always working on sound principles," says Rose.

Rose and Foley first tested the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate at the Wells Fargo Championship in May and, soon after, decided to purchase a system for themselves. Foley is very excited to start using his Swing Catalyst technology: "Appreciating the importance of ground forces in the development of an effective golf swing, the Swing Catalyst system is unique in that it allows me to examine weight-shift patterns and balance -- information that I couldn't ascertain if I were to rely on video alone," says Sean Foley. "Having the ability to use this technology in combination with TrackMan provides me with an unparalleled tool for the development of an efficient golf swing. Simply put, I am able to separate fact from opinion."

In addition to Foley, several other world renowned coaches have installed the 3D Motion Plate at their academies over the last couple of months, including Matt Killen, Scott Hamilton, Kevin Weeks, Bernie Najar, Chris Como, Grant Waite and Andrew Rice.

"It is exciting to see how many of the top coaches and players are now adding the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate to their repertoire," says Tom Christian, marketing manager for Swing Catalyst. "It seems like many of the top coaches agree with us in that ground forces are of great importance to the golf swing. PGA Tour coach Matt Killen decided to purchase the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate after his student J.B. Holmes scored the highest-ever recorded force factor just before his win at the Wells Fargo Championship in May.

The Swing Catalyst team recently installed the complete system including several high-speed cameras at the Killen Golf Academy in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

"As a teacher quantifying what happens during the swing, it’s important to learn what the best players in the world do in their swing and to also provide a numeric value on their ability to use the ground,” says Killen. “It’s very helpful in evaluating improvement."

- Torque, or rotational force, reflects the force produced in rotational motion, which translates through the golfer to the club and into the ball, says Dr David McGhie, head of R&D at Swing Catalyst. - The Swing Catalyst force factor is a relative measure of the maximum torque a golfer produces during the swing. Essentially, it is normalized by body mass, which takes into account the influence of mass on the forces that contribute to the torque. Generally, a person with greater body mass will produce larger ground reaction forces simply due to the greater body mass. By removing this effect, the force factor indicates the degree to which the golfer is able to create torque from his or her body mass. At the individual level, the force factor has been shown to be strongly correlated to club head speed at impact, which of course is a main determinant of driving distance.

The Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate is Swing Catalyst’s flagship swing analysis system, offering all the same data as the company’s basic Balance Plate, but also adds horizontal/vertical force- and torque measurements. Based on these measurements, the system calculates the amount of rotational force generated, and how well the golfer times this force relative to impact. All 3D Motion Plate data is perfectly synchronized with the video images and the data from a ball/club tracking device.

Rarely do you hear golfers and instructors talk about pressure shift when studying a golf swing. Rather, you are more likely to hear them say weight shift. To understand the difference between the two, let us take a closer look at what pressure really is.

The Swing Catalyst Balance Plate consists of more than 2000 high-resolution sensors that measure the exact amount of pressure applied to the ground. In short, pressure is force working over an area. In our case we are talking about the force the golfer is exerting on the ground and the area of the two golf shoes touching the ground (shown as the footprints in the Swing Catalyst software). The Balance Plate measures the exact size of the two footprints and the pressure that is applied to these areas. From this we get the pressure distribution, which is simply how much the golfer is pushing down on one foot compared to the other. In other words, it shows where the golfer is exerting force on the ground. When the pressure distribution between the feet changes throughout the swing, it indicates a shift in pressure, which is also shown in the center of pressure (CoP) trace. This is why we use pressure shift to describe the movement of the CoP. Most good players will perform a rapid, continuous pressure shift during the downswing. In the screenshot of PGA Tour player Kevin Streelman, this is illustrated by the smooth and straight line in the CoP trace from Kevin's trail foot (right) to his lead foot (left).

When analyzing a golf swing, weight shift is commonly used to describe what is actually pressure shift. We have even used weight shift ourselves since most golfers are familiar with this term. However, it is primarily a coaching term. By definition, weight shift refers to the movement of body mass, not the pressure measured by the Swing Catalyst Balance Plate. It's important to note that the golfer does perform a weight shift during the swing by moving the body mass, but this is not what is measured by pressure distribution. Nevertheless, pressure shift, or movement of the CoP, is usually a good indicator of weight shift for most parts of the swing, the potential exception being certain transition points.

We will discuss the relationship between pressure shift and weight shift in more detail later. For now, the distinction between the two is most important. The Swing Catalyst Balance Plate measures pressure shift, although this is often referred to as weight shift.

Hamilton is the PGA Director of Golf and Instruction at Cartersville Country Club, located in the foothills of northwest Georgia. Over the years, he's worked on the swings of many PGA Tour pros, and currently teaches Boo Weekley, Tim Herron, Will Claxton, Steven Bowditch and Scott Brown.

Now, he's thrilled to add the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate to his armor. "It blows me away at how detailed and visually compelling this system is," says Hamilton, the PGA of America's 2007 Georgia Section Teacher of the Year. "It shows me parts of the swing I've never seen captured before by any other system." Tom Christian Lindvag, marketing manager for Swing Catalyst, says Hamilton is just the latest in a slew of top instructors to add Swing Catalyst to their facility. "We've had a great year so far, and getting our equipment into top-caliber facilities such as Scott Hamilton Golf Academy bolsters our reputation even more," says Tom. "It's great to know that some of the top players in the world are relying on our system."

When studying Kevin Streelman's transition from backswing to downswing, why does the Swing Catalyst software show that most of the pressure is on his trail foot while most of his body mass is placed over his lead foot?

When analyzing the golf swing in the Swing Catalyst software, the seemingly independent actions of body mass and pressure can be confusing. Nowhere in the swing is this more apparent than in the transition from backswing to downswing, illustrated here with PGA Tour player Kevin Streelman. When studying this transition, why does the Swing Catalyst software show that most of the pressure is on the trail foot (R) while most of the body mass is placed over the lead foot (L)?

As explained in the article "Weight shift or pressure shift?", the Swing Catalyst Balance Plate measures the pressure applied to the ground by the golfer. Further, remember that pressure is force working over an area. This means that pressure is the result of the force exerted on the ground by the golfer. When standing still at address, pressure is usually distributed fairly evenly between the feet because the golfer's body mass (and therefore weight) is distributed fairly evenly between the feet. The Tour players we have studied tend to favor the lead foot slightly, typically displaying a 55-45 distribution. However, the positioning of body mass only determines the distribution of pressure in a passive situation, such as when standing still. During the swing, this relationship is not as clear. This is because the golfer can also actively push down, increasing pressure through force produced by the muscles.

Now consider the transition from backswing to downswing, the point where this confusion often arises. A golfer will push down with the trail foot to initiate the downswing. In the picture, this can be seen in the greater pressure on Kevin's right foot (R). The body mass, on the other hand, will start to move toward the lead foot in the transition. Notice that Kevin's body mass is favoring his lead foot (L), even though the pressure is favoring his trail foot (R). This is because he actively increases pressure on the trail foot (R) through muscle force. From this we can see that the distribution of pressure does not always follow the distribution of body mass. It will quickly "catch up" with the body mass in the downswing, though. Most good players employing a traditional swing style shift their pressure rapidly to the lead foot after the transition, illustrated here by the straight grey line in the center of pressure trace from Kevin's trail foot (R) to his lead foot (L).
